What is Your Favorite Success Story?
Selling my business to SmithBucklin was an amazing experience and I am extremely proud that many of our employees stayed with the company post-acquisition and became SmithBucklin employee-owners. A close second was winning “Best Boutique PR Agency to Work for” by The Holmes Report the years before and after the acquisition.
What Are Your Hobbies and Interests?
Obviously, my family (wife and two grown daughters) are my #1 passion but I dabble in many hobbies, including investing and golf. As a teenager, I discovered shortwave radio and after hearing broadcasts from more than 200 countries (including far off places like the Falkland Islands, Djibouti and Vanuatu), I became a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (call sign N90VQ). The ability to communicate wirelessly with people thousands of miles away never ceases to amaze me, even in the age of smartphones, Skype and the Internet. Reading books has always been a passion of mine (mostly history, investing, personal improvement and the occasional novel) and I have embraced social media during the last five years (follow me on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook – no promises on when I will reactivate my blog). My music collection features thousands of LPs and CDs and the best of the best cuts are on my iPod; no playlists for me, I simply shuffle more than 3,500 of my favorite songs.
What is the Title of the Last Good Book You Read?
The Dark Woman by P.C. Wren is a book I’ve read multiple times. This gem was written in the 1930s and the story is about a woman who destroys the lives of several men after they irritate a holy man while hunting in India. This is a beautiful piece of historical fiction with people like Mata Hari weaving in and out of the storyline.
Who Are Your Favorite Recording Artists?
Paula Cole, Style Council, Dears, Wilco, Golden Earring, Beatles, Kings X, Queensryche, Chris Whitley, Ali Farka Toure, Japan (including solo works by members David Sylvian and Steve Jansen), Terry Reid and Trail of Dead regularly pop up during shuffle play on my iPod.
Why Are You a Good Fit at Tech Image?
I believe in leading by example. PR is passion for me and I get a big kick out of seeing a client appear on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or on national TV. I try to inspire my associates at Tech Image to do the best work of their careers. We work hard and we play hard. Life is too short and if you are not having fun at work, there are other ways to earn a living.
