What is Your Favorite Success
Story? I am always in awe of people who persevere to achieve their goals. During a very hot July week in 1996, I rode my bicycle more than 500 miles across Iowa with some friends in an annual event. While complaining about the heat and hills as we panted along, I saw a gentleman with no legs biking with hand pedals. It was his third time riding in the event. Unlike us, he was cheerfully and (almost) effortlessly biking. It changed my perspective on what we can all do when we put our minds, hearts and souls into something.
What Are Your Hobbies and
Interests? I like to play as hard as I work, so I'm always moving. If I'm not spending time with my husband and two children, I work on growing the perfect salad in my vegetable garden, discovering places to visit both near and far, downhill skiing, cycling, following politics (more of an illness), cooking, reading and sailing, though I have no boat.
What is the Title of the
Last Good Book You Read? I really enjoyed T he Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece, Annie Barrows. Set in the mid 1940s, the book is written entirely in letters revealing hardships faced during WWII, friendships forged and interests developed. Charming, often humorous, often heartbreaking, the novel reveals a side of World War II not covered in history books. In the winter of 1946, writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. This begins a fascinating tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a community as extraordinary as its name. It's a lovely, little book -- smart, funny and sensitive. I've now added Guernsey to my list of places to experience. If for no other reason than to learn where the unusual title came from, check this one out.
Who Are Your Favorite Recording
Artists? If you picked up my iPod, you might think it's Lady Gaga. That's because my kids download music for me. The truth is I like most everything except Country, Opera, Smooth Jazz and Heavy Metal. Depending on my mood and what I'm doing, I might be listening to the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, something classical, Springsteen, U2 or Eric Clapton.
